Uniform Continuity of Continuous Functions on Compact Metric Spaces
A basic theorem asserts that a continuous function on a compact metric space with values in another metric space is uniformly continuous. The usual proofs based on a contradiction argument involving sequences or on the covering property of compact sets are quite sophisticated for students taking a first course on real analysis. We present a direct proof only using results that are established a...
متن کاملUniversal Uniform Eberlein Compact Spaces
A universal space is one that continuously maps onto all others of its own kind and weight. We investigate when a universal Uniform Eberlein compact space exists for weight κ. If κ = 2<κ, then they exist whereas otherwise, in many cases including κ = ω1, it is consistent that they do not exist. This answers (for many κ and consistently for all κ) a question of Benyamini, Rudin and Wage of 1977.
متن کاملCharacterizing Continuous Functions on Compact Spaces
We consider the following problem: given a set X and a function T : X → X, does there exist a compact Hausdorff topology on X which makes T continuous? We characterize such functions in terms of their orbit structure. Given the generality of the problem, the characterization turns out to be surprisingly simple and elegant. Amongst other results, we also characterize homeomorphisms on compact me...
متن کاملCompact Subsets of Spaces of Holomorphic Functions
In [1] compactness criteria in function spaces are investigated for general coorbit spaces. As an application it is shown that a bounded and closed subset A ⊂ F := {f : f is entire and Z C |f(z)|2e−|z| dλ(z) < ∞} is compact if and only if ∀2 > 0 ∃ a compact subset C ⊂ Cn with Z CC |f(z)|2e−|z| dλ(z) < 2 ∀f ∈ A. The methods of [1] cannot be easily adopted for the spaces Fm := {f : f is entire an...
